How to measure - Blackout blinds

Things to Remember

  • Use a steel tape measure for accuracy.
  • Measure in centimeters and round each measurement to the nearest 0.1cm.
  • Measure all windows, even those that appear to be the same width and height.
  • When ordering always specify the width measurement first and then the height.
  • Remember to specify ‘Recess’ or ‘Exact’ size when ordering. For more information on Recess or Exact specified measurements please read ‘Determine the type of mount Recess or Exact’.
  • Look out for any obstructions such as window handles, tiles, dado rails etc and take their position into account if necessary. This way you will be sure of a perfect fit for your blind.
  • Consider the stacking height for the product that you choose.
  • If you have any questions about measuring your window please call us on 0845 533 1023 or email us at enquiries@blinds4uk.co.uk.

Important note for measuring Blackout blinds

Please remember the WIDTH of a Roller Blind is the BRACKET to BRACKET measurement – not the fabric width (cloth size). See table below for guide on calculating the actual roller blind cloth size

Measuring

Determine the type of mount Recess or Exact

‘Recess’ Measurements:

This is the measurement you need to specify if you want your blind to fit inside the window recess. There is no need for you to make any adjustments as we will make the deductions for the blind to fit the recess perfectly. For recess deductions see Guide to Recess allowances below.

  • Measure the width of the window wall to wall (left to right) in 3 separate positions, as shown in the diagram. Note down the smallest measurement inside the recess.
  • Measure the drop of the window (head to sill) in 3 separate positions, as shown in the diagram. Again, note down the smallest measurement.

Note: For ‘Recess’ specified measurements we will make the necessary adjustment. see Guide to Recess allowances below.

Recess size - When fitting the blind inside the recess of the window

Inside Recess

‘Exact’ Measurements:

This is the measurement you need to take if you want your blind to hang outside the window recess. We will make your blind exactly to these measurements.

  • Measure the exact width area where you would like blind to cover. Note down the measurement.
  • Measure the exact area you would like the blind to cover from top to bottom as shown in the diagram Note down the measurement.

blinds4uk tip

For Exact measurements we recommend that you have an overlap of 51 mm (2") at the top and 38 mm (1.5") on each side

Exact size - When fitting the blind outside the recess of the window

Exact Measurements

Fabric width guide & allowances for Blackout Roller blinds:

Please remember the WIDTH of a Roller Blind (Blind size) is the BRACKET to BRACKET measurement – not the fabric width (cloth size). See table below for guide on calculating the actual roller blind cloth size

Fabric width guide & allowances for Blackout Roller blinds:

The allowance made to calculate your cloth size is basically your blind size less the width displayed in the table below. (Please note we work to an operating tolerance of +/- 5mm).

Collection Blind Width (cm) from Blind Width (cm) up to Blind Type Width allowance Height allowance
For 'Exact' deduct (cm) For 'Recess' deduct (cm) For 'Exact' deduct (cm) For 'Recess' deduct (cm)

Guide to 'Recess' specified blinds.

When specifying 'recess' measurement we will make the following deduction off the width of the blind size ordered.

Collection

'Recess' deduction

Splendor

 0.5cm

Reminiscent

 0.5cm

Express

 0.6cm

For the calculation on 'cloth size measurements' when ordering recess or exact size blinds see table guide above .

The fabric drop will always be longer than the measurements specified. This is due to the extra roll of fabric fitted around the tube to ensure the tube does not become visble when the blind covers the window.

Example One

Roller blind ordered from ‘Blinds4UK Splendor’ collection with chain control.

If ‘Exact’ width of 120cm is specified then the makeup of the roller blind will be as follows:

Blind width = 120cm less 2.8cm for brackets & pin allowance = Cloth Size 117.2cm

Example Two

Roller blind ordered from ‘Blinds4UK Splendor’ collection with spring control

If ‘Recess’ width of 120cm is specified then the makeup of the roller blind will be as follows:

Blind width = 120cm less 2.4cm for recess, brackets & pin allowance = Cloth Size 117.6cm

Example Three

Roller blind ordered from ‘All Other’ other collections with chain control

If ‘Recess’ width of 200cm is specified then the makeup of the roller blind will be as follows:

Blind width = 200cm less 3.9cm for recess, brackets & pin allowance = Cloth Size 196.1cm
